Alliances in the Healthcare Industry: Report of Study Findings

Jonathan Hughes, Laura Visioni and Alicia Faneuil
February 2009

This study explores current and anticipated use of alliances in healthcare, alliance challenges specific to the healthcare industry, and effective practices healthcare companies are deploying to drive alliance success.

The report examines:

  • Frequency of, and objectives for, alliances
  • Amount and organization of alliance staff
  • Alliance financial investments and returns
  • Alliance success rates
  • Causes of alliance difficulty and failure
  • Alliance partner selection criteria
  • Negotiation of alliance agreements
  • Alliance formation and management capabilities

The study shows that the use of alliances by healthcare companies has not been as prevalent as in other industries.  At the same time, alliance management capabilities at health insurance companies remain, in general, less developed than in other industries.  Measurement and reporting of alliance investments and returns also remains notably immature.  Additionally, the survey data suggest significant opportunity to improve alliance performance in the industry. The healthcare industry faces enormous challenges and healthcare companies will increasingly need to form alliances and partnerships, with each other, and with companies in a range of industries, to develop and implement effective solutions.
